Week 11 Winter Program

15th Front Left Bunker(Built by Kevin Farrell & Joe Cassidy)

We saw the start of this week with plenty of snow still preventing the course from opening. The snow cover brings with it a massive increase in risk of disease to the greens surfaces, as it traps heat creating a warm blanket on the green’s surface which is the perfect warm, moist conditions for disease to spread. The weekend cover spent much of their time removing as much as they could from the greens to preventing the spread of disease leaving them still in good shape even after this bad weather.¬†Surfaces have however become soft with the amount of heavy rain and I would be very grateful if a little extra time could be spent repairing pitch marks please.

On Tuesday we finally managed to open but with most bunkers still full of snow they were kept out of play. The heavy rain and wind made the ground conditions unworkable so the team spent the day sanding and painting benches in preparation for the start of the season.

The rest of the week was very productive with the completion of the 15th rear right bunker and front left bunker. The surrounding areas were also shaped up in readiness for turf this coming week.

The old path was removed, planted with gorse and seeded. The area will take time to regenerate and establish. Please use the new path as much as possible to give this area a chance to grow back.

Alistair Watts our mechanic is presently doing the winter servicing of all the machinery which includes the smallest machines we have such as strimmers and chainsaws to our large tractors and fairways mowers. This should take approximately 8 weeks to complete as all equipment will be fully serviced and recorded in preparation for the year. After this has been completed, the cutting units will then be serviced and sharpened towards the beginning of march in time for the season. In addition to this, Alistair will this year also be completely rebuilding two engines, one on an old diesel ride-on machine and the other on a utility vehicle which is a big job but done in house will keep our servicing costs down.

This coming week we will be turfing the areas on 15th and carrying out some repair work to the front of the 7th tee box. Work will also commence on the new banking around the 17th medal tee.
